Pregnancy Nutrition: Foods to Avoid

Eating healthy and nutritious food is very important when you are pregnant. The essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals should help you to overcome changes taking place in your body and provide your developing baby with everything it needs. However, there are certain harmful foods that you should definitely avoid.

What Not To Eat When You Are Pregnant:

  • Raw seafood including sushi;
  • Refrigerated smoked seafood;
  • Raw meats and poultry;
  • Raw fish;
  • Uncooked or partially boiled eggs;
  • Canned, tinned or prepackaged foods;
  • Soft and blue-veined cheese;
  • Pate;
  • Unpasteurized milk;
  • Unwashed vegetables;
  • Ice cream;
  • Homemade mayonnaise.

All these foods may be the sources of certain bacteria, including:

Listeria (Listeria monocytogenes) - a bacterium that causes serious infection. It can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth, premature delivery, or infection of the newborn.

Salmonella - is a kind of bacterial food poisoning that can cause stillbirth.

E.coli (Escherichia coli) – is a bacterium that can cause food poisoning and urinary tract infections.

Toxoplasmosis - a common disease caused by a parasite that may infect unborn child and cause blindness, deafness, seizures, and mental retardation.

Other Foods To Avoid During Pregnancy:

  • Liver – liver is a rich source of vitamin A that can be harmful for the baby.
  • Alcohol – Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause many physical and mental birth defects.
  • Caffeine - it causes your bones to lose calcium, increases your baby’s heart rate, affects the nutrition of your baby and may cause miscarriage.
  • Herbal tea - Drink herbal teas with caution and always consult your health care provider.
  • Artificial sweeteners - ingredients in soft drinks, desserts, candies and pastries that contain empty calories and promote weight gain.
